Week 3 – Narrative structures

In the third week, the group was able to display a variety of different narrative forms. Through three different movies, games and websites showed the difference between narrative strategies. Also, they carefully explored that the definition of narrative switching from the traditional linear structure can actually invite users to become active participants.

These three narrative strategies are not only widely used in movies, but also in literature, drama and video games. However, I have found that many multilinear are about interactivity, and most of the examples are video games. And many games are works that continue through the movie. For example, in Grand Theft Auto 5 released in 2013, players can play the story of the three main characters Michael, Franklin and Trevor, and achieve three endings. Their inspiration comes from the story itself. Therefore, these three narrative strategies are inseparable. They can influence each other and support each other. Their role is to increase audience participation. In conclusion, I think the content of the story is the soul. The three narrative modes are the bodies that support the soul.

For my own project, I will create the main storyline of about 3 characters. Each character has its own storyline. The audience or player can choose the storyline they want to develop. However, all aspects are closely linked to the storyline. The story will eventually lead to the same ending and will ultimately flow into the main storyline. Although there are different stories, the main storyline guides the structure of the story. In the meantime, I need to understand my abilities, and I can also introduce interactive elements through various platforms. These platforms can complement my work. I can’t make video games, and I don’t want to do it at this stage, but I can learn a lot about studying them and how they can engage users with the material.

Finally, Flypaper is a 2011 American crime comedy movie directed by Rob Minkoff. This kind of nonlinear expression technique is what I need to study.
